Labelling private body parts

Generalisation ideas

• Sorting:  sort public and private body parts
• Matching:  match private body parts for boys/men and girls/women to body images
• Giant drawings:  Lay down a roll of butchers paper and get students to draw each other’s outline body outline.  Decorate with clothing over private parts.  Use the figure to identify places it’s ok for them to be touched and not ok to be touched.  Note personal differences.  
• Role play:  how you could manage situations when someone asks to touch a private parts or does touch a private body part.
• Protective Education:  Identify places it’s not ok to be touched and what to do if those areas are touched by someone else.  There are times where it’s ok for private parts to be touched e.g. for medical procedures, identify these times and trusted people who can help.  Identify who a student can talk to about private body parts or any concerns they have.
• Private and public touch:  identify how people touch public body parts and learn about inappropriate types of touching.
• Public and private places:  where is it ok to show your private parts?  What if other people are in the same place e.g. your aunt is using the bathroom and you want to have a shower?
• Consequences:  what happens if you display your private body parts in public? what would happen if you wore your bathers to the library (or another public place)?
• Flipside:  how do other people feel when someone shows their private parts in public? how would you feel if someone showed you their (body part)?  What is the law around showing private body parts to other people?
• Cultural differences:  identifying different cultural practices and different classifications of private parts (e.g. hair covering, displaying breasts).
